Interview with Danny Gregory

You wont believe how psyched I am about Sketchbook Skool!
The first semester is starting in a little over a month and I am really looking forward to it.
At the moment, I am busy editing all the videos I shot for my klass. Its not just great to teach, but I also cant wait to learn from the other lessons in Sketchbook Skool, by this semesters awesome teachers.
Im sure in the first six-weeks semester of Sketchbook Skool each and everyone who joins, will change in some way. Maybe you get to think differently about your art, or maybe youll be approaching art in a different way than you did before. You may become more courageous and do some experiments, inspired by what the teachers in Sketchbook Skool talk about.
Grab your sketchbook and a pen and lets start!

Well anyway, Im so happy Danny and I got this thing started.
Heres a video in which he and I talk about it.

Needless to say (but Ill do it anyway!): join us in Sketchbook Skool. Click here to enroll.

Travel sketch pages

Okay so these are not from my actual art journal, but they are done during my vacation in Thailand and Cambodia.
I like my art journals to be not too small, so I have a bit of space, but certainly not too large eiter. I need to be able to chuck my journal into my bag and walk around with it, without it being to large or heavy. So 15x21 cm, something along those lines, will be suitable. To challenge myself though, I also brought a larger sized sketchbook with me. To see how I would feel about larger sized drawings. These are pages I did in a 21x30 cm sketchbook. Not THAT large, but a fair step larger than what Im used to.
This is the first page i did, and after finishing, I felt rather proud:

Then, on a different day, i sat down with the book again and started drawing without thinking too much, ending up with very small sketches! Huh, interesting.

Interesting how much chaos can be created in just a couple of days. As my husband was packing his bags (mine were done, I brought less than he did), I drew a quick sketch of my view from the bed.

I also tried a bit more detailed pencil drawing:

During a lazy afternoon in a cafe, I made these drawings. Which I like a lot. By looking at these, I can remember exactly where I was sitting, how the people moved that I was drawing, the colours, the atmosphere, and even what I drank: An iced coffee.

And one more bed-view sketch, this time in another room. The night before leaving to fly back home.

Since that last drawing, I havent touched the sketchbook. Okay, first of all because Ive been very busy and hardly had time for my daily art journal entries. But also, could it be that the book is too large? It does take me a little bit out of my comfort zone. Which makes me not really want to grab it yet, when I want to draw. But maybe, now that the weather in Amsterdam is getting better, I may take it outside to try some urban sketching and make sure I wont come back with just a couple of thumbnail sketches of the coffee I drank.

Wax on Wax off

Mr. Miyagi, Daniel Larusso

The Karate Kid is so quintessentially 80s to me. As a grade school kid I had a great time watching it. How could you not love Pat Morita? And I fondly remember that Glory of Love song by Peter Cetera.

It will be interesting to see what they do with this new Karate Kid featuring Jackie Chan and "Will Smith Jr".

Life in Amsterdam

I tend to forget how remarkable it can be for tourists, how we Amsterdammers do most of our traveling through the city by bicycle. Just the other day, I talked about this with a friend who lives in Texas. There, even if you wanted to, its just something you dont do. Not just because of the large distances, but also because of crime. Huh, I have to say Im a happy cycling Amsterdammer, even more now.

Although I dont even need to get onto my bike when I have to get groceries. Just around the corner there are many shops with lovely stuff. Like this pomegranate. Makes my mouth water just thinking of it.

Sketchcrawl

Last Saturday, it was Sketchcrawl day. During the global sketchcrawl, groups of sketchers all over the world meet to sketch in public together. Because I was in the South of the Netherlands, I couldnt organize a Sketchcrawl in Amsterdam like I did on the previous sketchcrawl day, but I did go to sunny Maastricht to hook up with about 20 sketchers. We met at the St. Servaes Bridge, which I drew to warm up a bit. In the right corner, I drew in the silhouet of a few fellow sketchers.
While almost the whole group of sketchers was facing and drawing the river Meuse, I was drawn towards this row of houses (facing the other way) somehow:
Both parents of my parents were from Maastricht. I had no idea though, that when my grandmother was young, she used to live on the top floor of that very building on the left. As you may or may not know, my grandfather used to be an artist painter, and he actually made a painting of the view over the roofs, out of the window.
Of course I knew my grandfather made many paintings of the river Meuse, and of the bridge I drew there, too. After posting a photo of my drawing on my Facebook page, my uncle told me this little pieve of family history.

Journal Page mandarins

Its the little things in life that can make huge differences.

Last week it was the first week of this round of JustDrawit. I enjoy every single course day. Its wonderful to inspire the participants to draw every day live things, and to make drawing a daily habit.

In two weeks, the course participants will learn how to use their coloured pencils for a drawing like this one. If you want, you can learn this too and enroll for the next JustDrawIt course in June! Why dont you have a look here?

Parasoul Animation Old work May 2012

Here is a little work Ive never posted the wips, well Im gonna show the steps I did to get the final animation of Parasoul from Skullgirls breathing,
Visit their page is an awesome fighting game, and is comming to PC this 2013

www.skullgirls.com

1. Well I did first the animation freehand, I didnt use vectors or any program more than Photoshop and some layers to separate the frames. Here as you can see, I tried to simulate the original physics of the game while Parasoul is standing in guard, the boobs bouncing was just too amazing in the game and I tried to emulate it, I failed and I decided to take it off.

2. No more Bouncing, I just cleaned the lineart and I added more frames and a better timing.

3- Base colour, I wanted to see how it looks with the bouncing effect but didnt conviced me

4. More Faster? nop, well in this phase I was just experimenting I kind of like some frames and some dont, it was a really joyfull moment!

5. Cleaned up and effects and shading added. 10 hours to this point, again I wanted to see how good was the bouncing effect on her but, it was not enough, so I get rid of it.

6- Finished (10 hours frame by frame drawn by hand, no vectors no timeline, just freehand).

Keep on!

Journal pages more Maastricht

Two more journal pages I did during my stay in Maastricht.

On Tuesday, I visited the Bonnefanten Museum. Its a great museum, inside and out. I found out about this awesome artist Sol LeWitt. Apparently his work is famous, but I didnt know his work (have I been living somewhere under a rock or something? No not really, bu how cool is it to discover new things, even if theyre not new at all?) I was absolutely in awe of his scribbles.

Lets draw from life and from our imagination! I can teach you fun tricks and techniques to boost your skills! Click here to enroll in the program that starts March 11!

CG Painter practice March 27th 2013

Lets write out clearly.-
As I said in my first post in FB and my blog, this is just a project, the goal is to become an excellent and qualified Painter and Designer, vanity stays apart and maybe you can see poor progress but thats the point, I am not here for just show stuff,it have another end, it will be critical for future evaluation of this time later.
My only interest is to focus on the errors and mistakes of my artwork, as you can see, they always looks sketchy and clay-like, is intentional, Im more worried about 100 things besides how cool BG or Eyes look like. The point is making self experience and forget about advices and tutorials, at the end only self experience and self knowledge will be valid, nothing can match that.

Key word is "CORRECTION". This is a good time for evaluation, because I have been away from fundamentals a while ago, is time to go back.

Lets keep this overreaching dedication flow, temptation can be strong but can not be compared to the desire inside.
"Lets perfect the patience that is hard as steel." lets believe in those words.
Keep on, GO GO! We can do this.

it wont be so hard (y)

Work is a challenge, but it can be done.
Refueling ~~~

Travel Journal 5

Wheels.
Is it hard to draw bikes or cars? Well, why would it be harder than drawing anything else? When I draw, I look at the shapes and the colours and try not to think about what I am actually drawing. For instance: I draw a rounded shape. Not a wheel.
The only problem you could have drawing one of these rides, is that they move. Or you are taking your time to draw a parked vehicle, and then suddenly the driver decides to take off with it!
The Tuk-Tuk driver decided to do so, but luckily a new one parked at the same spot, so I combined the two, to finish the drawing on the left page.

Psych!

Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster

Im not really a huge follower of crime/murder investigation shows, but while "Psych" could fit in that category, its way different. When I first heard the concept of "a guy with heightened observational skills who pretends to be psychic and starts a detective agency with his friend Gus", I was immediately intrigued.
It didnt disappoint, as the hilarious 80s references and playful banter between the two longtime friends really hit all the right notes for a fun loving 80s kid like me.

I also love seeing Shawn and Gus spar with the Santa Barbara police while still making sure they keep their "psychic" ruse a secret. Its on the USA Network in the States and on NTV in Canada. I dont know if its everyones cup of tea, but check out an episode and see what you think!
